Queensland Youth Orchestra 3 (QYO3)

Conductor Dr Bradley Voltz

Watch the  Queensland Youth Orchestra 3 conducted by Bradley Voltz play the opening of Malcolm Arnold’s Little Suite No. 1 for Orchestra in the 2011 QYO Finale Concert:

Queensland Youth Orchestra 3 has 80 members ranging in age from 10 to 19 years. Under conductor Bradley Voltz, the orchestra performs a variety of repertoire including classical works and medleys from musicals arranged for symphony orchestra. Popular works include Sibelius’ Finlandia and selections from Phantom of the Opera, Romeo and Juliet and Carmen. During the weekly rehearsals, tutorials and camp, the musicians are taught the essential skills to play and perform in a symphony orchestra.

QYO3 camp on Mt Tamborine

Camp report by QYO3 concertmaster Kaitlyn Bowen

“I wasn’t sure what to expect this year at QYO3 camp, but I think everyone in the orchestra can agree it went exceptionally well; with everyone enjoying themselves and learning a lot. The tutors were absolutely fantastic; they gave us some great advice and really helped us understand our pieces in more detail. Bradley was his usual perfectionistic self; making rehearsals fun with his own brand of humour, but improving our musicality immensely along the way. The volunteers were amazing; I honestly don’t think this camp (or Rob) would have survived without this awesome team.

I think what I enjoyed the most was meeting all the new faces and really getting to know people. One of the best bonding experiences was our world-class soccer game during free time on Saturday; everyone joined in and had a great time (although some people did take this a little too seriously… i.e. me)

It was amazing to see the result of one weekend’s hard labour come to fruition on the Sunday during our performance. I think the performers, audience and Bradley agreed the calibre of the performance was excellent.

I believe that camp is one of the best ways for the entire orchestra to bond and come out of our shells. Before the concert on Sunday, I really felt like we were forming our own little family. Thank you to everyone who helped out and to the WEC Conference centre for supplying the venue and delicious food. I look forward to practising and performing with everyone.”
