About the concert

Come and join the celebration as Queensland Youth Orchestras (QYO) pays tribute to its founder (1966) and Director of Music, John Curro AM MBE.

To celebrate Mr Curro’s 80th birthday, QYO is forming a 150-member Alumni Orchestra - including some of Australia’s finest professional musicians - to perform Richard Strauss’s magnificent Alpine Symphony.

The Alpine Symphony is a masterpiece of the symphonic poem genre, depicting a mountain climb in the Bavarian Alps. Beginning at Night, the ascent begins just after Sunrise, through forests and an alpine pasture (listen out for cowbells). The music On the Summit is calm and reflective, with a beautiful oboe solo capturing the moment of silence. The descent becomes dangerous with a wild storm, followed by a beautiful Sunset as the clouds disperse.

In the first half of the concert, the current Queensland Youth Symphony orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with soloist Stephen Emmerson. Dr Emmerson is a QYS Alumnus (1976-1980), Senior Lecturer in Music Literature and Cultural Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, and has performed widely throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Pacific. The orchestra recently completed its 12th international tour in July, including four highly acclaimed performances of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in Germany, Singapore and Malaysia with soloist Jayson Gillham.

Mr Curro has inspired thousands of young musicians throughout Australia and internationally throughout his career as a conductor, teacher and performer. He is one of the most respected figures in Australia’s orchestral music scene and under his leadership, the Queensland Youth Symphony has a reputation as one of the world’s finest youth orchestras.
