How to apply
The closing date for applications is 4.00pm, Saturday 4 August 2012.
Apply and pay online at www.qyo.org.au. For those unable to apply online, please complete the enclosed application form. Faxed, scanned and emailed applications will not be accepted.
The single audition application fee is $40. Second and subsequent applications for family members, or for a separate instrument, attract a reduced fee of $35, with a maximum fee for families of $75. An additional late fee of $30 applies to applications submitted after 4pm, 4 August 2012. Audition fees are non-refundable.
You may nominate one or more orchestras for which you would like to be considered. It is recommended to list a second preference in case you are unsuccessful with the first one. Preferences should be listed in order of QYO standard (the higher orchestra first, see chart on page 3), and you will only be considered for the orchestras that you list. It is advisable to discuss your preferences with your music teacher to ensure you apply for the orchestra/s appropriate to your standard. For your audition, you are required to prepare the excerpts for the orchestra listed as your first preference.
JOINING TWO ORCHESTRAS (new for 2013)
If you successfully audition for positions in 2 orchestras on 2 instruments, QYO will only offer you 2 positions in 2 orchestras if approval is given by both conductors. If approval is given and both positions are accepted, two sets of fees will be payable by the due date. If you join QYS, you are not permitted to join another QYO ensemble.
BiG Band Applications
If you wish to apply for the Big Band and another ensemble, you must submit two separate applications and pay the $75 family fee. You will receive two audition times, two sets of excerpts and attend two auditions. You are not able to join both QYS and Big Band.
Instruments for audition
You may apply for one or more instruments. If you wish to audition on two different instruments (eg. cello & clarinet), you must submit TWO separate application forms and pay the family fee of $75. If you wish to audition on two instruments within the same family (eg. flute & piccolo), you must submit TWO forms and pay one fee of $40.
Eligibility / AMEB Grade requirements
AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) grade levels indicated are a guide to the equivalent standard that applicants must have achieved before auditioning. Applicants are not required to have passed examinations before auditioning. Due to the competitive nature of QYO auditions, players may need to be of a higher standard than indicated to be successful. There is no guarantee that a player who has passed an exam in any of the indicated minimum grades will be offered a QYO position.
RESULTS / FEEDBACK (new for 2013)
The Director of Music appoints a professional and experienced artistic panel for auditions. The results and ranking decisions of the panel are considered final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into. It is not possible to receive verbal feedback or written reports specific to any player’s audition. The panel, staff, volunteers and board members are not permitted to discuss results with students, teachers or parents. There is no guarantee that a current member of QYO will be offered a position in the same orchestra or a different orchestra in the following year. Players progress at different rates and new applicants apply each year, making the audition process very competitive. Players who regain a position in the same orchestra may be placed anywhere in the section or on the reserve list, depending on their performance in the competitive audition process for positions that year.
