Checklist for First Rehearsal
- At the first rehearsal for the year, music and music folders are distributed and members are introduced to the conductor and the volunteer administrative staff.
- Please make sure you arrive at least 20 minutes before the rehearsal start time. Note that Wind Symphony starts one hour earlier than usual (6pm rather than 7pm) for the first rehearsal of the year only.
- Don’t forget your music stand!
Every QYO member is required to bring their own music stand to every rehearsal, tutorial and concert. QYO provides a small number of music stands to percussion sections only, to cater for percussion-heavy works where more than one stand per player is required.
- Remember to bring a pencil and eraser to put markings in your parts as directed by the conductor or tutor.
- Parking: while QYO cannot guarantee parking availability, we try to ensure that sufficient parking is available inside the grounds for most rehearsals during the year. If you are forced to park on the street, please carefully check the parking restrictions to avoid incurring a parking offence ticket. The best way to ensure getting a park is to arrive early.
Old Museum Building Works
We are pleased that the Department of Public Works has commenced a new project to repair the leaking roof at the entrance to the Exhibition Hall, ie. the main entrance to the three rehearsal studios.
The downside is that access will be heavily restricted in terms of parking and general access from mid-January through to April 2010. Building access will mainly be through the Concert Hall foyer and Studios 1 and 3 (accessed via the verandah) during this period. Parking will be limited and more information will be available shortly.
Dr Martin Buzacott: Early History of Classical Music in Brisbane
On Saturday 28 November 2009, Dr Martin Buzacott delivered a fascinating and moving lecture about Brisbane’s classical music history up to 1930. The Old Museum Concert Hall, then known as the Exhibition Building Concert Hall, was the main concert venue in Brisbane from its opening in 1891 until 1930, the year in which the Brisbane City Hall opened. Legendary performers such as Dame Nellie Melba, Ignaz Paderewski, Jan Kubelik and Percy Grainger plus many other famous musicians performed at the Exhibition Concert Hall.
