QUEENSLAND YOUTH ORCHESTRA 2

QYO2 is the second orchestra at QYO, conducted by Paul Dean, one of Australia’s leading composers and performers. The degree of difficulty for playing in this orchestra is significantly higher than all other QYO ensembles except QYS. Members of this group develop high level performance skills and play some of the greatest works ever written for orchestra.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Violin, cello, trumpet AMEB Grade 7 minimum or equivalent

  • Viola, oboe, bassoon, horn, trombone, tuba AMEB Grade 6 minimum or equivalent

  • Double bass AMEB Grade 5 minimum or equivalent

  • Flute, clarinet AMEB Grade AMusA minimum or equivalent

  • Maximum age 23 years (at 31 December 2025)

  • 2025 primary school students are not eligible to audition for wind, brass or percussion instruments for QYO2

All positions are offered ‘within the section’ and seating orders will be arranged and rotated by the conductor.

CONDUCTOR

Paul Dean is widely regarded as one of Australia's foremost musicians in his multiple capacities as soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, composer and Artistic Director. He is Associate Professor and Head of Winds at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. He is a founding member of the Endeavour Trio and co-Artistic Director of Ensemble Q with Trish O’Brien. Paul was the Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) from 2010 - 2015 and a Principal Clarinet with the Australian World Orchestra. Paul was the Artistic Director of the Four Winds Festival and the Tutti Beijing International Youth Music Festival and was also the founder and Artistic Director of the Southern Cross Soloists, the Bangalow Music Festival and the Sunwater and Stanwell Winter Music School.

Paul was Principal Clarinet with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (1987 – 2000) and has performed as soloist with the Queensland, Melbourne, West Australian, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia and Southern Sinfonia in NZ, and the Trondheim Symfoniker (Norway). He has appeared with a wide range of chamber ensembles and major festivals throughout Australia and internationally.

Paul was Composer in Residence with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2019 and has also been commissioned to write works for many different instrumental soloists, festivals and orchestras. His Symphony No 1 Black Summer won the Paul Lowin Orchestral Prize and he was winner of the 2023 APRA Award for Work of the Year – Large Ensemble for his Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra.
