Welcome to the QYO online audition application form for entry in 2025.


All those who applied last year must open this form through the personalised prefilled link which was emailed to all past auditionees, so your details match your file on the QYO database.


  • Please read the Audition Brochure for orchestra standards, age limits and general information, FAQ and Audition Process & Policies documents on www.qyo.org.au
  • The closing date for applications is Monday 5 August 2024.  Late applications will be accepted after the closing date, with an additional $30 extra fee. 
  • Please discuss your application and preferences with your music teacher to ensure you have listed the correct orchestra/s based on the required standards.  You are also required to include your teacher's name and email address in the application. 
  • The application fee payment can be made by internet bank transfer or credit card using Stripe.
  • A single audition application fee is $57;  for other family members or for a second instrument, the fee is $52.  Families of 2 or more pay $109 maximum.  



Please read all audition dates as some are over 2-3 dates. Auditions will be held at the Old Museum Building and Brisbane Grammar School and all dates and venues are subject to change.

Sunday 13 October 2024: Violin (QYO2 & QYO3), Viola, Cello (QYO2, QYO3 & JSE1), Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba & Big Band

Monday 14 October 2024: Violin (QYS)   

Saturday 19 October 2024:  Violin (JSE1 & JSE2), Viola & Cello (JSE1 & JSE2)
      

In December a list of vacancies is advertised (if any) and the QYO office arranges various late auditions with new applicants and the artistic panel. New applicants must prepare the relevant orchestral excerpts and a 1-2 minute own choice piece.  If you are applying after December 2024, for a vacancy, please complete this audition form and pay the $30 late application fee if applicable.

A reminder that all previous applicants must open this form through the personalised prefilled link that was emailed to you, so your details match your previous audition file on the QYO database.  If you are applying for a second instrument or if you are applying for an orchestra plus Big Band, you still must use the prefilled link and change the preferences.






If you would you like to audition for another saxophone, you need to complete another audition form and perform another audition.  You can use the same prefilled form or complete a new application form and you don't pay an additional fee.  Example: if you applied on tenor, can you also audition on alto or baritone playing each separate instrument. To audition on 2 different instruments (eg. cello & clarinet) or to audition for Big Band and another orchestra, you must submit 2 separate application forms and pay $57 on the first application and the reduced fee on the second application.


To audition for 2 instruments within the same instrument group (eg. flute & piccolo or alto sax & baritone sax) you must submit 2 forms and pay the $57 on the first application and zero on the second application.

Emails from the office regarding auditions, results and membership will be sent to "one email address for all QYO notices" which must be for an applicant or parent/guardian who is over 18 years old due to QYO's privacy policy.  For applicants under 18, please use a parent/guardian address.  Emails will be sent for:

  • Confirmation of this online application
  • Notification of audition day, time & venue and how to access excerpts (mid September)
  • Letter with audition result  (mid November)
  • Other membership and fees information
  • New offers for Reserve Members on waiting list

In December, when membership lists are final, each orchestra's administration team will send newsletters, schedules and camp information by email, to the "one email address for all QYO notices".  At this point, you can update email addresses with each orchestra's administration team if necessary, to include other email addresses  Thank you.

The maximum age limit at the end of next year, 31 Dec 2025 is:  12 yo for JSE2, 15 yo for JSE1, 18 yo for WE,
23 yo for WS, QYO2 & QYO3 and 26 yo for QYS. Big Band has max age 25 yo and min age 15 yo at 31 Dec 2025.

Please nominate the orchestra of your first preference below. Consider listing a second or an additional preference as there is no guarantee you will be placed in your first preference.  Please discuss with your teacher to ensure you are applying for the orchestra/s most suited to your standard and within the age limit.   


You will prepare musical excerpts set for the orchestra of your first preference.  These excerpts are 3-4 minutes duration and are provided on the QYO website mid-September.  You will also prepare your own choice piece of 1-2 minutes duration.  Each audition is 4-5 minutes duration.  The excerpts are chosen by the artistic panel to reflect the standard required for each orchestra. You will only be considered for the orchestras that you list and preferences should be listed in order of QYO standard, eg. QYO2 before QYO3.  Big Band can only be listed as first and only preference.  To audition for another orchestra in addition to Big Band, or audition on a different instrument (eg. both cello and flute), you must complete separate applications. 





  

If you are unable to attend an audition in person on the advertised dates, you may be able to submit a pre-recorded audition. This applies to applicants living interstate or in regional areas, or applicants with special circumstances.   Please email auditions@qyo.org.au to request a pre-recorded audition and receive excerpts early enough to prepare and submit your recording by the due date of Monday 16 September 2024, or earlier as required.

  

If your parent/guardian or you (if you're over 18), can marshal for 1-2 hours around your audition time, please complete details and the office will make contact if you are needed on the volunteer schedule. The marshals help to keep auditions running on time by marking the roll and directing students to warmup and audition rooms. Thank you.

All applicants must be regularly studying with an instrumental music teacher.  QYO recommends you discuss preferences with your music teacher to ensure you are applying for the orchestra/s most suited to your standard and age.  QYO may contact your music teacher regarding your application.

Please click the 'submit application' button and you will receive a confirmation email to the email address you listed earlier as the 'one email address for all QYO notices' for over 18 applicant or parent/guardian.  If confirmation does not arrive within 24 hours, please email auditions@qyo.org.au as your application may not have submitted correctly.  In mid September, you will receive a letter stating the audition day, time and venue and have access to the excerpts for preparation.  Please mark this in your diary or calendar.
